Program Structure and Key Dates

Program Duration: Six weeks, comprising a two-week online self-study followed by a four-week residential program.​

  • Online Component: June 23 – July 4, 2025
  • Residential Component: July 6 – August 3, 2025​

Eligibility Criteria

  • Grade Level: Applicants must be rising high school seniors (current juniors at the time of application).
  • Age Requirement: At least 15.5 years old by the start of the residential program.
  • Academic Background: Demonstrated aptitude in science and mathematics; prior experience in programming is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • International Applicants: Welcome to apply, provided they meet the age and grade requirements and possess proficiency in English.

Application Components

  • Transcripts: Official high school transcripts.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two letters from teachers, preferably in science or mathematics.
  • Essays: Personal statements detailing interest in astrophysics and motivation for attending YSPA.
  • Standardized Test Scores: Not required or considered in the admissions process.

Tuition and Financial Aid

  • Program Fee: $8,000, covering tuition, room and board, field trips, project costs, and instructional materials. Travel and incidental expenses are not included.
  • Deposit: A $2,000 deposit is required by April 28, 2025, to secure a spot. The remaining balance is due by June 1, 2025.
  • Financial Aid: Need-based aid is available for admitted students, with typical awards covering up to 50% of tuition. In some cases, discounts of up to 80% may be granted based on financial need and available funds.

Curriculum Overview

Online Self-Study (June 23 – July 4, 2025):

  • Introduction to Python programming.
  • Fundamentals of observational astronomy.
  • Completion of self-guided exercises and participation in online discussions.

Residential Program (July 6 – August 3, 2025):

  • Morning Classes: Held at the Leitner Digital Planetarium Theater, covering topics such as:
    • Observational Astronomy
    • Telescope Optics
    • CCD Imaging and Calibration
    • Photometry and Spectroscopy
    • Stellar Astrophysics and Evolution
    • Differential Calculus and Numerical Simulations
    • Radiative Transfer Modeling and Model Optimization
    • Genetic Algorithms and Machine Learning for Data Mining
    • Statistics and Uncertainty in Measurements
    • Scientific Writing

  • Afternoon Sessions: Hands-on tutorials in the observatory computer lab, focusing on data analysis and programming using tools like SAO DS9, AstroImageJ, NumPy, Astropy, Matplotlib, and MESA.

  • Research Projects: Students work in teams to collect and analyze data using Yale's telescopes and remote observatories, culminating in a scientific paper and presentation at the YSPA mini-conference.
