The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) offers a suite of immersive summer programs through its Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) initiative, designed to inspire and prepare high school students for careers in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine). SpHERES: Sparking High Schoolers' Excitement for Research in Engineering & Science

Overview: Hosted by the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, SpHERES is a dynamic research program tailored for rising 10th to 12th graders from Champaign-Urbana high schools. The program focuses on introducing students to clinically-focused research and promoting health career opportunities.​

Program Dates:

  • In-person Orientation: June 17–18, 2025
  • Research Period: June 20 – August 1, 2025
  • Final Symposium: August 1, 2025​

Key Features:

  • Authentic research experiences in various STEM fields, including bioengineering, neuroscience, and chemical engineering.
  • Weekly seminars on topics like college readiness, innovation, and clinical skills.
  • Exposure to health career-related research and clinical skills.
  • A $2,400 summer stipend.​

Eligibility: Rising 10th to 12th graders from Champaign-Urbana high schools with an interest in STEM.​

POETS Young Scholars Research Program

Overview: The POETS (Power Optimization for Electro-Thermal Systems) Young Scholars Research Program offers high school students an opportunity to engage in authentic research experiences in areas like electrical, computer, and mechanical engineering. The program aims to introduce students to scientific research and promote career opportunities in the field.​

Program Dates:

  • Pre-training: June 7–11, 2025
  • Research Period: June 14 – July 30, 2025​

Key Features:

  • Participation in cutting-edge research projects under the mentorship of faculty or graduate students.
  • Weekly seminars on research projects, college readiness, and scientific communication.
  • A $2,000 summer stipend.​

Eligibility: High school students interested in STEM fields, particularly those traditionally underrepresented in STEM.​

Grainger Engineering Young Scholars (GEnYuS)

Overview: The GEnYuS program immerses high school students in department-specific research groups within the Grainger College of Engineering. Participants engage in research areas such as computer science, mechanical engineering, nuclear or quantum physics, aerospace engineering, materials science, electrical engineering, and civil engineering.

Program Dates: June 29 – August 1, 2025

Key Features:

  • Hands-on research experiences in various engineering disciplines.
  • Mentorship from faculty and graduate students.
  • Participation in a final symposium to present research findings.​

Eligibility: High school students with a strong interest in engineering and related fields.​
