The USA Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad (USAAAO) offers a pathway for high school students passionate about astronomy and astrophysics to represent the United States at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). The 2025 cycle includes a series of competitive exams, training sessions, and culminates in the international competition.​

The 2025 cycle includes a series of competitive exams, training sessions, and culminates in the international competition.​

Key Dates for USAAAO 2025

  • Registration Period: January 1 – January 31, 2025
  • First Round Exam: February 8, 2025
  • National Astronomy Competition (NAC): April 12, 2025
  • Online Training Camp: June 2 – August 4, 2025 (tentative)
  • International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA): August 11 – August 21, 2025 (Mumbai, India)​

Selection Process

First Round Exam

  • Format: Approximately 75-minute multiple-choice exam with around 30 questions.
  • Platform: Conducted online via Gradescope.
  • Proctoring: Administered through Zoom by USAAAO volunteers.
  • Resources Allowed: Scientific calculator and a provided table of constants.
  • Fee: $30 registration fee; financial aid available upon request.
  • Eligibility: Open to all students; however, only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to advance to the national team.​

National Astronomy Competition (NAC)

  • Format: Approximately 2.5-hour free-response exam.
  • Platform: Conducted online with Zoom proctoring.
  • Eligibility: Top scorers from the First Round Exam are invited to participate.
  • Team Selection: Top 5 students are selected to represent the USA at the IOAA. Additional students may be invited to join the online training program based on performance.​

    • Stellarium: A planetarium software for studying constellations and deep-sky objects.​
  • Advanced Reading:
    • Astronomical Problems by B.A. Vorontsov-Vel’Yaminov

    • Exoplanets edited by Sara Seager
    • Cosmology and Astrophysics Through Problems by Padmanabhan
  • Past Exams:
    • Access to previous USAAAO and IOAA exams and solutions is available for practice.​

Training and International Competition

  • Online Training Camp: Selected students undergo free weekly online training sessions led by past IOAA participants and professional astronomers. The training includes readings, assignments, and discussions to prepare for the IOAA.​
  • International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA): The top 5 students represent the USA at the IOAA. In 2025, the competition will be held in Mumbai, India, from August 11 to August 21. Participation costs are covered by the Masson Family Fund.​
